"The eyes see what the heart feels”, says Adger Cowans. For the greater part of eighty-five years, Adger has made visible the dreamscapes of his heart, creating photographs, paintings, music and film. He is one of the most talented and multifaceted artists working today. And, yet for me and for many others, Adger has, until recent years, flown under the radar, not because of the work but because of his aversion to the spotlight. He’s a guy who appreciates his time alone with the sunlight. He likes to sit by the ocean and wait all day for the image to meet him there. He’s a humanist who believes in better days ahead. He’s an artist who seeks out the authentic and avoids the disingenuous. One man laughing by the sea. Over the past year, I’ve visited Adger many times to discuss the work in this book, and each time I felt a stronger curiosity and affection, not for a photographer, but for someone who (as Sam Wagstaff once said of those dancing on the other side of the window) “seems a little mad at first until you realize they hear the song that you are watching.” It’s precisely for this reason that this book exists. Whatever you see, whatever you read, it may seem a little mad at first, until you realize, Adger…” - Steven Albahari from the Introduction to the book, ADGER, © 2022 -
